Gibraltar Rock

Your guide will pick you up at the set time and place.
Obligatory Passport or Identity Card for EU members.
You will then head towards GIBRALTAR, an overseas British territory commonly known for representing one of the two Columns of Hercules in mythology. The city lies at the feet of a huge limestone Rock which rises above sea level and offers from its viewpoints fabulous views over the bay of Gibraltar and even the northern coast of Africa if the weather permits it. During the journey the tour escort will inform you about the programme of the day according to the option you have purchased. The guide will also comment upon several curiosities regarding Gibraltar, the main customs limits for products purchased in Gibraltar and the landscapes and the towns you will see on the way. Once you cross the border, the coach will take you to the coach park and from this moment you will have 5 hours in Gibraltar including free time and the tour you have purchased.

Gibraltar will feel familiar to British visitors – a little slice of Britain in the sunshine plus it’s easy to get around.  If you don’t fancy shopping, there is plenty to consider seeing while you are there take a visit to the Rock and a good way of seeing it is to take The cable car that leaves from Red Sands Road and takes you to the limestone peak with spectacular 360 degree views.

If you are feeling fit it is a rewarding reasonably easy walk down, but allow yourself around 3 hours to see all the sights.  The monkeys that they call “Barbary Apes” but they are in fact “Barbary Monkeys” are on “The Rock” and are best treated with respect, tales of painful revenge abound if you choose to interact with them.  You should also be aware that feeding them can result in a hefty fine (up 4,000 pounds).

Down from the top you will also find “Upper Rock Nature Reserve”, St. Michaels Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels, that were hewn out from rock manually by just 13 men when they were under siege from the armies of the Spanish and the French attempting to take back Gibraltar.  The Moorish Castle is next on your path and its 11th century tower is all that is left of the Moorish rule of Gibraltar.

Eventually you will be able to join the shoppers in Main street which runs down to the military fortified square that is “Casemates” which was the original barracks of the British Army’s.  Some of the buildings around the square were where ammunition was stored. The square now offers many places to eat and drink as is “Irish Town”.
